Beyond Labels

One of the biggest issues in education today is that institutions often focus on a child’s label rather than the child themselves. Children are frequently labeled as “with autism,” ADHD, intellectually impaired, or “learning disability,” and the educational process is then tailored to that label instead of the child’s individual needs. This approach limits a child’s potential because educators reduce expectations based on assumptions about what a child with autism, ADHD, or other challenges can achieve.

All children want to learn, but their learning styles vary. Some excel with traditional lectures, while others learn best by doing, using their hands, and manipulating objects. Some need a combination—hearing, seeing, and then doing. There is no “best” or “worst” way to learn; there are simply different ways of learning.

Traditionally, schools have segregated students with challenges by placing them in “self-contained” classrooms or “resource” programs. But what if we moved beyond labels and started educating children as individuals? What if educators viewed every child simply as a learner? What if their mission was to help every child become their brightest self?
