Math at Embrace Academy has been all about applying learning in creative and practical ways. Students have explored how math connects to real-world situations, from geometry and equations to recipes and restaurant orders. Each group has focused on building confidence, curiosity, and a stronger understanding of how math shapes everyday life.
Exploring Shapes and Movement
Group 1 explored two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures. They learned to define different shapes and identify their attributes, such as the number of faces and vertices. Students also examined everyday objects to see which could roll and which could slide, helping them connect geometry to the physical world. This hands-on exploration helped them see how shapes appear in daily life and why their structure matters.
Solving Equations and Building Cities
Group 2 focused on solving equations and inequalities, while reviewing the order of operations using the PEMDAS rule. Once they mastered the basics, students took on a bigger challenge by becoming city planners. They used their knowledge of volume and scale to design and build their own city blocks.
This project allowed them to:
- Apply math skills in a real-world design activity
- Work collaboratively on a large-scale project
- Visualize how equations and measurements shape the world around them
Understanding Functions and Problem Solving
Group 3 deepened their understanding of functions and how to represent them using equations, tables, and graphs. They studied how rates of change appear in linear functions and practiced solving word problems by interpreting real-life scenarios mathematically. These lessons encouraged students to think critically about patterns, relationships, and how math can describe what they see in the world.
Connecting Math to Everyday Life
Another class explored how math shows up in both everyday activities and professional settings. They reviewed multiplication and division, applying these skills to solve real-life challenges. To make the lesson more meaningful, students worked on adjusting recipes to serve different numbers of people. This activity showed how division and scaling are used in cooking, planning, and other daily tasks.
A Real-World Math Adventure
To bring math outside the classroom, students took a short walking field trip to Burger King. They looked at the menu, chose what they wanted to order, and calculated the total cost of their meal. Older students practiced rounding up to make sure they had enough to pay, and every student ordered their own food. Even those with limited language skills participated, followed directions, and practiced saying “thank you.” It was a simple but valuable lesson in using math for everyday independence.
