Science at Embrace Academy has been lively and full of discovery this semester. In our small but mighty science program, students have been learning through hands-on experiences that turn lessons into real understanding. Each project has encouraged curiosity, creativity, and teamwork as students explored topics that connect science to the world around them.
Volcano Adventures
Students began the semester by learning about volcanoes and what makes them erupt. They explored how pressure builds beneath the Earth’s surface and how tectonic plates shift to create these dramatic natural events. To bring what they learned to life, they designed and built model volcanoes, then watched as their creations erupted. The excitement of seeing their projects in action made the science behind it stick in a way that books alone never could.
Model Train Engineering
After studying volcanoes, students turned their attention to building model trains. They planned and tested their own designs, discussing what worked best and making improvements along the way. The project taught them how creative thinking and persistence go hand in hand with problem-solving. It also showed how science and engineering can be both challenging and fun when you work together toward a shared goal.
Exploring Drone Technology
One of the highlights of the term was exploring drone technology. Students learned about how drones fly, how they’re controlled, and the many ways drones are used today—from photography and mapping to delivery and research. After covering the basics, students practiced flying small drone orbs. It took patience and steady hands, but by the end of the activity, they were confidently navigating through the air.
This project helped students build:
- A stronger understanding of flight and navigation
- Better hand-eye coordination
- Confidence using new technology
A Journey Through Space
The semester ended with a journey into space. Students learned about the phases of the moon, patterns in the night sky, and how the solar system fits together. They spent time identifying constellations and tracking how the moon’s appearance changes over the month. The unit wrapped up with a field trip to the Dale Etheridge Planetarium, where students saw breathtaking views of stars and planets. The visit deepened their appreciation for astronomy and inspired plenty of questions about what lies beyond Earth.
